It’s getting harder to enjoy turning the printed pages of your favorite magazines. Recently, even the 115-year-old Redbook joined a parade of magazines that have announced they will soon go digital-only.

The good news is that it’s getting easier — and cheaper — to swipe through digital magazine pages. Proliferating technology gives consumers more options for consuming media — and some options are downright cheap, if not free.

Following are three examples of the ways you can read digital magazines on the cheap.

1. Texture

If you’re a big magazine reader — or need a gift for someone who is — check out Texture. It’s a subscription service that has been described as the “Netflix of magazines.”

Texture gives you unlimited access to more than 200 magazines via its app. So, you can basically read magazines anywhere and anytime you want.

The app is compatible with phones and tablets that run on Android, Apple iOS or Amazon Fire HD operating systems.

A Texture subscription costs $9.99 per month, but a free seven-day trial is available. To try it out, download the Texture app from, which you can do for free.

If you’re hesitant to try Texture because you’re unfamiliar with it, don’t worry. It’s no online magazine scam. One of the world’s most reputable companies — Apple — owns the company behind the app, Next Issue Media.

2. Amazon

If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you already have free access to digital magazines — and many other publications — through a feature called Prime Reading.

As Amazon describes it:

“Prime Reading is a service that allows Prime members, or members of an Amazon Household, to read as much as they like from a selection of Kindle books, magazines, short works, books with Audible narration, comics, and more — all at no additional cost.”

You can access this media on a wide range of devices, including:

3. Libraries

Just as libraries subscribe to print publications like magazines, they also subscribe to digital publications. So, if you prefer the latter, ask your local library what digital magazines are accessible to folks with a library card and how you can access them.

You might have to read those digital magazines on devices at the library, or you might be able to access them from home by simply logging into the library’s online portal for digital publications.
