If your gas gauge needle is dipping toward “E,” you can ignore this story. The time to fill up your tank is now, regardless of what day of the week it is.

But if you can, avoid filling up on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays.

The weekend trio are the costliest days to buy gasoline, according to a recent analysis by GasBuddy, which describes itself as the “leading source for crowdsourced, real-time fuel prices.”

In its analysis, GasBuddy looked at gas price data from January through March of this year. According to GasBuddy:

“While Saturday is the worst day to buy gas in 16 states, Friday has the most expensive average price of any other day of the week.”

On the other hand, make it through the weekend without filling up, and you will likely be rewarded for waiting. Monday features the lowest average gas price in 30 states, GasBuddy says.

How to cut the cost of gas

Turning to GasBuddy itself is one way to cut the cost of filling up. The app helps you locate the cheapest gas stations in your area at any given time. GasBuddy also offers rewards to those who join its GasBack program.

But using GasBuddy is just a start. There are many other sensible things you can do to trim your fuel costs.

For example, buying discounted gift cards makes sense for many motorists. As we explain in “5 Easy Ways to Cut the Rising Cost of Gas“:

“Some of us typically frequent the same gas station. Maybe it’s convenient, or perhaps we just like the coffee they serve. If you know exactly where you plan to fill up the tank the next few times, it’s probably worth investing in a discounted gift card for your favorite gas retailer.”
